School of Global Studies and Languages Workplace Values

Workplace Values for the School of Global Studies and Languages (GSL)

March 31, 2022

  1. We treat staff and faculty colleagues as professionals and peers. We make requests, not demands, and respect their work and expertise.
  2. We respect business hours and allow sufficient time for staff and faculty colleagues to respond to requests.
  3. We respond without procrastination to official inquiries and requests by the stated deadlines. We honor deadlines so that staff and faculty colleagues have adequate time to carry out their duties.
  4. We are mindful of the job duties of staff and faculty colleagues and consider these when making requests. We are mindful that we don’t always know what a particular task requires, especially if it is a job we’re not familiar with. What might seem like a simple request from a faculty perspective might involve a lot more work from a staff perspective and vice versa.
  5. We respect the work-life balance needs of staff and faculty colleagues, and are mindful of vacations, leaves, breaks, and approved remote work arrangements.
  6. We accept duly approved processes, policies, and decisions. We respect that while staff are responsible for interpreting and applying policies, they are not their creators, and many policies cannot be changed at the unit level.
  7. We provide context and background to assure full understanding of questions, concerns, and suggestions that arise in the course of daily business.
  8. We respect one another by listening to everyone’s ideas regardless of their professional status or rank. We strive to ensure that everyone has a chance to speak and share their views. We avoid interrupting others and are conscious of not monopolizing conversations.
  9. We support but do not micromanage each other in our respective responsibilities. 10. We ask for help when we need it. We provide clear expectations and feedback. We praise good efforts and results. We avoid gossip and speaking negatively about colleagues.
