Overview

Tenure track faculty must undergo review in order to renew their first contract. Generally, the first contract is three years in length. Upon successful review, the contract will be renewed for three additional years to take the faculty member to the promotion and tenure review during the sixth year. Contract renewal reviews are sometimes referred to as "third-year reviews" or "midterm reviews." For information on what to include in the contract renewal review, please see the faculty collective bargaining agreement (CBA).

The faculty CBA requires units to give the employee under review 10 days to respond to the faculty committee report and the department head report. Following this 10-day period, the unit submits the review, and any responsive material from the faculty member, to CAS. The Divisional Dean will prepare a separate report and recommendation, to which the candidate has an additional 10 days to respond. Following this period, CAS will submit the complete evaluation file to the Provost's Office.

Contract Renewal Information

The unit must also submit the specific information (FTE, salary, dates) for the contract renewal itself. Recently, this has been achieved on a spreadsheet from Human Resources, but has been accomplished in the past by units' submitting RTOs. Assuming a positive review, the faculty member's contract will be renewed until the date that promotion and tenure is expected to be granted, up to a maximum of three years. (If tenure is not granted after those three years, the faculty member will generally receive one-year contracts until tenure is required.) In the case of a negative review, the unit, college, and Provost's office will work to determine the terms of the subsequent contract. Generally, the candidate will receive a one year contract that is renewable upon improved performance, or terminal and non-renewable.
