Commencement Marshal Recruitment

Last update: 09/14/2015 - 1:46pm

The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) furnishes eight marshals for spring commencement in June and two for summer commencement in August. This obligation rotates among units from year to year.

CAS maintains the roster and rotation schedule. The frequency of service is relative to the size of the unit's faculty:

  • 20 or more - Every two years
  • 10 to 19 - Every three years
  • 9 or fewer - Every four years.

In March, CAS emails heads of all units due to contribute a marshal, requesting that they provide the name of a volunteer who has agreed to serve. CAS forwards volunteer marshal contact information to the University Commencement Coordinator, who will follow up with information regarding commencement day responsibilities, event logistics, and instructions for ordering regalia.

The Office of the Dean of Students handles most aspects of the University's spring and summer commencements.
