Policy Statement

Dean's and Provost's Authority

All campus space is controlled and allocated by the Provost; colleges, schools, departments, programs, centers, and institutes do not own space. Space allocated to the College by the Provost is allocated to departments by the Dean. Consequently, the Dean may change space allocation to units, and the Provost may change space allocation to the College.

Office Space Assignment

Priorities and guidelines. Although some departments have sufficient office space within their historical allocation, the college often suffers from a general shortage of space. When space is in short supply, priority will be given to active-duty faculty and teachers in the following order:

  1. Tenure-track faculty
  2. Non-tenure-track faculty
  3. Graduate Employees with work assignments that require an office
  4. Retired faculty: we suggest the following guidelines.
    1. Retired faculty who are teaching will have appropriate office space during the terms they teach. Either a smaller-sized office or office sharing will typically be assigned. In some cases, it may be possible for a faculty member to retain their pre-retirement office, but you should not promise this.
    2. Office sharing should be assessed individually based on continued involvement in instruction and externally funded research.

Lab Space Assignment

  1. Lab space assignments should reflect the research needs of the faculty member. The head, the dean, or the provost may reduce space allocation if research can be conducted in a smaller space. Where possible, they may increase allocation if more space is needed for the faculty member’s research program.
  2. Because of the university’s responsibility toward sponsoring agencies, sponsored research will be given higher priority for lab space than unsponsored research.
  3. Retired faculty with need for lab space should be accommodated, when possible, but this will often require a reduction of or sharing of space. Retired faculty without external funding are unlikely to be allocated lab space.
